หากเอ่ยคำว่า"มะเร็ง" ในวิกิพีเดียได้อธิบายไว้ว่า เป็นกลุ่มของโรคที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการเจริญเติบโตของเซลล์ที่ผิดปกติ หรือทางการแพทย์ระบุว่าคือ เนื้องอกร้าย ซึ่งถือเป็นโรคร้ายที่หลายคนกลัว เพราะโรคมะเร็งจัดเป็นสาเหตุของการตายประเภทหนึ่งที่องค์การอนามัยโลกคาดการณ์ว่าในปี2563ทั่วโลกจะมีคนตายด้วยโรคมะเร็งกว่า11ล้านคน และจะเกิดในกลุ่มประเทศกำลังพัฒนามากกว่า7ล้านคน ซึ่งในไทยมีคนไทยเสียชีวิตจากมะเร็งเป็นอันดับ1คือปีละ6หมื่นราย หรือเฉลี่ย1คนทุก8นาที ซึ่งสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว มหาวชิราลงกรณ์ บดินทรเทพยวรางกูร ทรงสนพระทัยและห่วงใยต่อบรรดาผู้ป่วยมะเร็งเป็นอย่างมาก โดยจะเห็นได้จากพระราชดำรัสในพิธีเปิดการประชุมทางวิชาการโรคมะเร็งภาคพื้นเอเชียแปซิฟิค เมื่อวันที่16 พย. 2536 ว่า เป็นที่ทราบกันดีว่า โรคมะเร็งเป็นโรคร้ายที่เป็นอันตรายต่อชีวิตมนุษย์เป็นอย่างยิ่ง และอัตราการป่วยด้วยโรคนี้ก็ยังไม่มีทีท่าลดลง ไม่ว่าในประเทศที่เจริญแล้ว หรือประเทศกำลังพัฒนา
จึงเป็นการแน่นอนว่ามะเร็งนั้น ไม่แต่จะเป็นโรคร้ายทำลายชีวิตมนุษย์ หากยังเป็นตัวการทำลายความสุขความเจริญ ทุกสิ่งของมนุษยชาติพร้อมกันไปด้วย จำเป็นอย่างยิ่งที่ประเทศทั้งหลายจะร่วมมือป้องกัน และลดอัตราการป่วยด้วยโรคนี้ลงให้ได้ และจากความสนพระทัยนี่เอง จึงเป็นที่มาที่ในนิตยสาร แพรว ได้ลงรายงานไว้ว่า พระองค์ได้โปรดเกล้าให้จัดตั้งศูนย์มหาวชิราลงกรณ์ ธัญบุรี ภายใต้โครงการกาญจนบารมี ซึ่งน้อยคนที่จะรู้ในเรื่องนี้ ว่าพระองค์คือองค์ประธานในการจัดสร้างศูนย์บำบัดรักษาผู้ป่วยมะเร็งครบวงจรแห่งแรกในประเทศไทย เพื่อถวายเป็นพระราชกุศลแด่พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดช เนื่องในโอกาสมหามงคลทรงครองราชย์ครบ50ปี
และศูนย์บำบัดมะเร็งนี้ ไม่ได้มีแต่เฉพาะการรักษาผู้ป่วยแต่เฉพาะทางร่างกายเท่านั้น แต่ยังได้จัดสร้างศาลาธรรมานุภาพสำหรับเป็นสถานที่วิปัสสนา และฟังธรรมของผู้ป่วย เพื่อรักษาทางด้านจิตใจควบคู่กันไปด้วย โดยผู้ป่วยที่เข้าทำการรักษาที่นี่ ส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นผู้ป่วยมะเร็งระยะสุดท้ายที่รพ.แต่ละรพ.ไม่รับรักษา ซึ่งญาติผู้ป่วยเล่าให้ฟังว่าศูนย์บำบัดมะเร็งนี้ดูแลผู้ป่วยในช่วงบั้นปลายชีวิต ไม่ให้ทรมานจากโรคร้าย แต่สุข สงบด้วยธรรมะ และนอกจากนั้นพระองค์ยังได้ทรงเปิดศูนย์ป้องกันและควบคุมโรคมะเร็งส่วนภูมิภาคทั่วประเทศใน6จังหวัด คือ ชลบุรี ลำปาง อุดรธานี อุบลราชธานี สุราษฎร์ธานี และ ลพบุรี อีกด้วย นับเป็นพระมหากรุณาธิคุณอย่างหาที่สุดมิได้ต่อคนไทยในอีกโครงการหนึ่งของ สมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวมหาวชิราลงกรณ์ บดินทรเทพยวรางกูร ซึ่งน้อยคนนักจักได้ทราบถึงพระเมตตาอันยิ่งใหญ่นี้ของพระองค์
